Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823) Raeburn was the son of a ‘shady character’ with interests in textiles and quarrying. He was first apprenticed to a silversmith before branching out into portrait painting. To sharpen his craft he visited Rome in , funded by the income from an advantageous marriage to a widow, Ann Edgar.
